.The Elephant Butte Historic District encompasses two distinct periods in United States History. The first is the creation of Elephant Butte Dam in the early 20th century. There are several buildings still in use from that period, including the pump house and the former administration building which has been renovated into a beautiful lodge. The second period is the Civilian Conservation Corps era from about 1936 until the beginning of WWII. During this period, extensive construction and landscaping took place. The recreational casitas on the lake shore, the fish hatchery complex and several housing units were constructed during this period. The C.C.C. is also responsible for the intricate stonework walls, bridges and water diversion culverts you will see throughout the district. There are numerous hiking trails and abundant wildlife. During the summer season the Rio Grande River provides numerous recreational opportunities
